Dominoes are a game in which players try to place tiles, called dominoes, on a table so that they touch one another at their exposed ends and form chains. Each domino has a value that is based on the number of dots (also known as pips) in the two visible sides of the tile. Each side of a domino is either numbered from zero to six, or blank (which may be ascribed any value by the player). Each end of a tile can also be ascribed a value; the total of the values on both ends is called the rank of the domino or its weight.
In a standard set of dominoes, there are 28 unique pieces. This is because the basic double-six set contains one domino for each possible combination of two adjacent ends, each having a value from zero to six. Alternatively, a single-six set of dominoes may be used.
The most common type of set is made from clay, but sets have also been produced from other materials, including bone, silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell (mother-of-pearl) or ivory; and dark hardwoods such as ebony. Some wooden dominoes are carved, painted or inlaid with pips and may have a decorative edge. Other sets have a more standardized look and are crafted from polymer materials such as plastic.
Each player, in turn, places a domino on the table. The domino must be positioned so that its exposed ends match an existing domino in the chain, with each subsequent domino being placed at right angles to the previous domino. If a domino is played so that its exposed ends show the same number, it is awarded points based on the number of multiples of five remaining in the opponents’ hands.
A domino that is positioned cross-ways across a double is known as a spinner and has special rules. It can only be placed so that its two matching ends are touching each other; otherwise it is disallowed from being played. The resulting snake-line of dominoes is then counted.
In recent years Domino’s has been experimenting with various modes of pizza delivery, such as purpose-built vehicles and drones. Its efforts are designed to complement its core business of pizza-delivery and to modernize the company’s image.
Domino’s CEO, Steve Doyle, is committed to promoting Domino’s core values, one of which is “Champion Our Customers.” This involves listening to what customers say about the company, and making changes to improve customer service.
In a 1983 video, University of British Columbia physicist Lorne Whitehead showed that a series of 13 dominoes – each about a millimeter tall and only 1 millimeter thick – can knock down objects more than twice their size. This demonstration, referred to as the Domino Effect, is a visual reminder that even small actions can have large consequences. The same principle can apply to the way that a writer plots his or her story. For example, if a scene in a novel does not have logical impact on the scene ahead of it, it is likely that the scene will not work.
