In addition to placing bets, blackjack players must also decide whether to take insurance. This bet pays a 1:1 payout if the dealer has a blackjack, but it reduces the player’s chances of winning the hand. After the players have placed their bets, the dealer will deal the first card to the left of the table. This is done by a simple slide of the cards across the table. When a player has an ace and a 10 in their two cards, they have a “blackjack.” This is the highest hand in the game. Blackjack is one of the few casino games that offers a mathematically optimal strategy for the players. This was achieved in 1956 by a group of U.S. Army mathematicians known as the Baldwin group.
